To celebrate Black British Excellence and the 50th birthday of one of the UK’s finest DJs and broadcasters – Johnathan Joseph aka DJ Spoony – we created and produced an event called ’50BBE’, a one-of-a-kind 8-hour livestream.
Broadcast from a central London location, the event featured 19 of some of the most famous black British artists, celebs, activists and icons. At the time of the event (June ’20), not only was the country in the midst of a pandemic but the world had united in awareness of and widespread support for the Black Lives Matter movement following the tragic death of George Floyd in May.
Organised in just 2.5 weeks, the livestream pulled in 25k live viewers, was watched for over 1,000,000 (yes, one million!) minutes in total and raised over £20,000 for The Black Curriculum, Black Heart Foundation and The Stephen Lawrence Trust in just 24 hours.
Featuring the likes of Idris Elba, Craig David, Beverly Knight, Reggie Yates, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Ian Wright and many more, this incredible event featured live performances, interviews, ‘Versus’ DJ battles and much more. We’re thrilled that 50BBE won an FMBE gold award in January 2021 for the Blue Square Groups’ events agency, OnLive Events.
