Investment into the growth and progression of our people is really important to us at Blue Square, and we’re so proud of the team members currently developing their skillsets through apprenticeships.

With National Apprenticeship Week in full swing, we sat down with two of our team members Charlotte Allen and Charlotte Cunningham to find out more about their journey so far, what they’re learning, and what advice they have for others considering an apprenticeship.

What made you want to pursue an apprenticeship?

Charlotte Allen:

I really wanted to learn more, develop and just gain new knowledge and skills through on-the-job learning. I wanted a qualification that worked with my current HR role and would help me with my career.

Charlotte Cunningham:

I’ve worked within HR for a while now. I never went to Uni so having the chance to develop, build my technical skills and gain a better understanding of HR and People practices appealed to me. I love the fact that I can get a formal qualification as part of my everyday role.

Can you share a memorable experience or project from your apprenticeship journey so far?

Charlotte Allen:

I’ve really enjoyed learning about safeguarding and understanding how to spot warning signs. I also enjoyed understanding more about different learning styles – it’s fascinating that everyone is different and learns in their own way.

Charlotte Cunningham:

Passing my first assignment – the 1st out of 7 in total!

What opportunities have you been given so far to put what you’ve learnt into practice in the workplace?

Charlotte Allen:

I completed a module on customer service which has given me such a better insight into our clients, products, and services. I’ve been able to apply this in my everyday role when finding talent for our clients, and by giving the best experience possible to our candidates through better communication skills and finding them a role that makes them love Mondays!

Charlotte Cunningham:

I’ve been able to support the wider People team with different projects outside my day-to-day role. I’ve learnt about organisational structure and culture that’s helped me understand HR practices and solutions in more depth. There are lots of transferable skills and soft skills that have really elevated my approach in my current role, like project management across Talent projects and campaigns in a more methodical and organised way.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Charlotte Allen:

Jump at the chance. Getting a qualification while you’re learning on the job helps so much.  Everyone around you can help and support you through the process.

Charlotte Cunningham:

I’ve really learnt that organisation and time management is SO important – make sure to protect your time throughout the course, take it in bite-sized chunks, and don’t be afraid to ask for help! Your tutor, your team, your mentor, and your manager all want to see you succeed and will support you!

How do you envision your future career path after completing your apprenticeship?

Charlotte Allen:

I’m excited to continue learning and working with Blue Square and applying my new skills and knowledge to my role as well as supporting the wider team. I’m hoping my new skills will not just benefit the company but the employees as much as I can. It’s a fantastic development opportunity.

Charlotte Cunningham:

I really want to broaden my career in HR and am excited to put the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to the test supporting the People team and business to the best of my ability.
